Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and wax tanks in winemaking. It may involve work in confined spaces.The unit applies to individuals who work in winemaking operations and take responsibility for their own work. Individuals generally work under supervision but have some autonomy and accountability for their own work.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, and food safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Legislative requirements relating to confined space entry and hot work controls apply to this unit. Special tank entry and breathing equipment may be required. Users are advised to check with the relevant state/territory health and safety in the workplace authority.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare materials and tank for waxing
  • Identify and confirm waxing requirements
  • Confirm environmental guidelines and identify potential health and safety in the workplace hazards and controls according to workplace procedures
  • Select, fit and use personal protective equipment required for waxing process
  • Confirm with supervisor that the relevant worksite permits have been obtained prior to commencement of waxing process
  • Prepare tank and confirm that it is ready to wax in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Check equipment and confirm readiness for use according to workplace procedures
  • Confirm that services are available and operational to meet waxing requirements
  • Prepare wax according to manufacturer's and workplace instructions
  • Remove top layer of wax following safe work practices
  • Apply wax according to workplace procedures
  • Operate equipment according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
  • Monitor waxing process and address non-conformances in process and equipment according to workplace procedures
  • Confirm waxed tank meets waxing requirements

  • Identify and implement appropriate equipment shutdown procedures
  • Clean and store equipment
  • Collect, treat and dispose of or recycle waste generated by both the waxing process and cleaning procedures
  • Return tank to operating order according to workplace procedures
  • Record workplace information according to workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
